An entry is a word for which detailed information is either gathered or produced, and by which the user can access that information. In the Encyclopaedia of Iranian Architectural History, entries fall into seven categories according to subject: Terms, Works, Geographic Names, Persons, Historical Periods, Primary Sources, and Movable Works. The following contains description of each kind of entry, as well as their relation to the subject.

Description: A technical word or phrase used in the context of Iranian architectural and urban history.

[edit] Work

Description: A monument, building, historical site, etc. pertaining to the Iranian architectural and urban history. The following classification can be employed for different types of works:

  • Neighborhood, mahalle,barzan, kuy
  • Alley, kuche, gozar, darband, bonbast
  • Marketplace, bazaar, bazaar-che, rasteh, dalan, char-su
  • Quarter, meidan, meidan-che
  • Monument and complex
  • Site and archaeological hill
  • Components of a building
  • Non-construction components (murals, petrograms, etc.)
  • Road (inter-city)
  • Qanat, waterway, canal
  • Cave, eshkaft, dast-kand

[edit] Geographic Name

Description: A proper noun that designates a place. Different types include:

  • Country (in its contemporary political sense)
  • Region (Like Central Asia, Transoxania)
  • Cultural area (Like Bam area, Mesopotamia area, Karoon area, etc.)
  • State/Region/Satrap (in its historical sense)
  • Province (political)
  • City (political)
  • Settlement, including town, county, village.

These entries may also include the names of mountains, rivers, etc., as determined by the academic board of the Encyclopaedia.

Description: The name of an individual pertaining to the Iranian architectural and urban history These persons include the architect, patron, master builder, administrator, restoration commissioner, destroyer, etc., which pertain to either a Work or a Geographical Name. They may also be the author of a primary source, a researcher, or a discoverer.

Description: The historical periods used in the Encyclopaedia are based on divisions made in the following references:

  • Hassan Pirnia, Tarikh-e Iran-e Bastan (History of Ancient Iran), Tehran: Negah, 1386.
  • Hossein Nasr, Ahmad Mostowfi, & Abbas Zaryab (supers.), Atlas-e Tarikhi-e Iran (Historical Atlas of Iran), Tehran: Geographical Institute of University of Tehran, 1350.
  • Gholam-Hossein Mosahab (super.), Da’erat-ol Ma‘aref-e Farsi (Persian Encyclopaedia), Tehran: Amir Kabir, 1380, 3 vols.
  • Historical periods compiled in the Cultural Heritage Organization by Mohammad Haj-Seyyed-Javadi.

[edit] Primary Source

Description: Any type of record or documentation which is contemporary to the subject. Of them, only those are recognized as entries that are proven in research to have related content. Different types include:

  • Books
  • Famous historical maps (whether large or small) with proper names
  • Famous historical documents, including soltaniat (governmental), divaniat (administrative), and ekhvaniat (private).
  • Famous pictorial documents, including miniatures, engravings, and the such.

[edit] Movable Work

Description: An article of movable work pertaining to the Iranian architectural and urban history. Some of these include:

  • minbar
  • Carpeting (such as Qali, Zilu, Gelim, etc.)
  • Qandil
  • Construction tools

Note. An article is not recognized or included as an entry unless posing a special or unique significance.

Entries in the Encyclopaedia are linked together in a predefined, concrete network structure which will be thoroughly discussed later in Related Entries. These references can be formally arranged into two general groups as follows:

[edit] Reference Type I:

Description: If the name of an entry appears in materials concerning another entry, a reference is made to the former. From this point on, this will be referred to as Reference Type I.

[edit] Reference Type II:

Description: If the content of an entry is related to another in a manner that the editorial experts consider to cross –reference it, it will be done so. From this point on, this will be referred to as Reference Type II.
